UCY/UCYA Activities and Updates ~ October 2011 to October 2013


October 2011:

  • Convention for the UCY took place on October 14 to 15 2011 at Canad Inns Polo Park in Winnipeg. This year’s theme was “Walking in the Footsteps of Christ” with guest speakers Archbishop James Weisgerber of the Archdiocese of Winnipeg and Bishop Paul Chomnycky of the Eparchy of Stamford. As usual, there was a special session just for youth on Saturday the 15th during which we elected our new executive for 2011-2013. During our special youth session, we learned about perceptions and how to better walk in the footsteps of Christ. In addition, our new executive was elected for the 2011-2013 term. Congratulations to our President: Travis Taylor, Vice-president: Brittney Taylor, Treasurer: Kristina Ewchuk and Secretary: Alexandria Kazmerik. Congratulations also to all those who agreed to serve on the executive as members at large. Thanks also go to our youth who provided the entertainment for the banquet.
  • On Tuesday October 4 the Ecumenical Youth Ministry Leaders hosted a workshop at the chancery, 233 Scotia Street on fundraising. Tamara Lisowski lead the workshop along with Debbie Coss of the United Church and it promises to be a fruitful and interesting event.
  • 8 UCY members attended the Ukr Park Fund Dinner Sat, Oct 22

November and December 2011:

  • The Unity 2012 Team visited parishes to give our presentation: Thalberg on Oct 9, 2011 ~ St Josephat’s on Oct 30, 2011 ~ St Joseph’s on Nov 5 & 6, 2011 ~ Holy Ghost & Christ the King on Nov 13, 2011 ~ St John’s on Nov 20, 2011 ~ St Basil’s on Nov 27, 2011. By the end of 2011, the Unity 2012 Team had visited 25 parishes in Manitoba to share the enthusiasm that they have for Unity 2012 and what it promises to bring to the province!   We visited the Cathedral on December 4, Gonor, West Selkirk and East Selkirk on December 11, and finishing the touring year off at St Andrew’s Parish on December 18
  • The UCY was invited to join the youth group at Immaculate Conception Parish in Cooks Creek, MB at their youth Christmas party on December 16 starting at 6pm.
  • On November 10 and 11 the Unity 2012 team held a weekend workshop at the chancery in order to plan and coordinate the event to be held the following August. We went as a group to the Remembrance Day service at St Joseph’s, after which we continued our planning meetings. In the evening, we enjoyed fellowship as a group with bowling at Billy Mosienko Lanes.

January 2012

  • Christmas caroling at Holy Family Nursing Home, The Metropolitan’s and The Redemptorist Residence on New Year’s Day.
  • Attended the New Year’s Levee at St. Basil’s Parish.
  • Attended and helped out at the youth component of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity on January 27th. Travis spoke to those gathered about his journey as a Christian Young Adult and captivated them with his conviction and sincerity.

February 2012

  • The annual Super Bowl of Caring was held at various parishes on Super Bowl Sunday and donations were split between The Welcome Home and other community groups of the individual parishes’ choice.
  • On Tuesday, February 7 the Ecumenical Youth Ministry Team presented a session on disclosure and sensitive youth issues at Sherwood Park Lutheran Church, 7 Tudor Crescent
  • On Friday, February 17th Table for Two was held at St. Joseph’s parish. There were about 12 young couples from our Eparchy who were able to sit and discuss important issues in their relationship with each other and the guest speakers were Rev. Gregory and Melita Zubacz.
  • Four members from the Unity Team visited a couple of Parish Council meetings at the beginning of the month to share with them the purpose of Unity 2012, and that they should support and pray for the young adults in their parish to attend Unity.

March 2012

  • Jay Korban and Andrew Konopelny represented the Archeparchy in Ottawa at the beginning of March to take part in the Canadian Catholic Youth Ministers (CCYMN) conference. The theme was “Be still and know that I am God,” and participants were encouraged to explore the ways in which we break through the clutter of our lives and be still to know that God is there. The Ukrainian Catholics also got together and led the 3rd Hour, for which they received much praise from the Roman Catholic Participants.
  • On Saturday March 17, the Unity 2012 planning team and UCY executive held their monthly meeting at 1:00 pm at 233 Scotia. Following the meeting, 12 UCY members went to dinner at Baraka Pita Bakery followed by glow bowling at Mosienko Lanes.
  • Attended Theology on Tap on Thursday, March 22, which was held at the King’s Head Pub at 6:30 pm. The March TOT focused on the document Apostolicam Actuositatem (Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity). What are the rights and responsibilities lay members of the Church are called to? What is the right relationship we have with members of the clergy? How do we fit into the primary mission of the Church: the spread of the Gospel?

April 2012

  • Our first in our speaker’s series that the youth and young adults will be hosting for all parishioners of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy took place on Sunday, April 1 at 7:00 pm at Holy Eucharist. The speaker was Fr. Michael Kwiatkowski under the title “The People of God Gather Together on the Shore Before the Final Crossing.”
  • Attended the third annual Catholic Youth Rally on Saturday April 28th which was held at Immaculate Conception Parish, 181 Austin St. North (Next to St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Catholic Parish)
  • The UCY Executive purchased 4 tickets and attended the St Michael’s Fundraising dinner on April 28th.

May 2012

  • 20 young people were invited to and attended the youth/young adult night at The Welcome Home for this years’ Serve session on May 21.
  • Updated the UCY and Unity 2012 websites to make sure they had the most accurate and up to date information for those registering at the early bird registration deadline.

June 2012

  • Planned and Hosted Sr Janet’s going away party/luncheon for June 9th
  • Held the End of the Year UCY event: Mini Golf at Harbour View
  • Had a UCY Movie night at St Vital Movie theater
  • Attended a UCY event: dinner and bonfire at the UCY President’s home.
  • Attended the information night for the Patriarch Visit at Holy Eucharist Parish

July 2012:

  • Visited Ukrainian Park Children’s Camp

August 2012

  • A group of 6 young adults attended the theology of the body seminar by Christopher West on August 4.
    • We also had weekly Unity 2012 planning meetings (Aug 1, 7, 13) leading up to Unity 2012
    • 128 individuals from all eparchies attended Unity 2012 this past summer, including four from the United States, 70 from Manitoba, 20 from ON, 1 from BC, 18 from AB, and 15 from SK
    • 7 members Attended the information night for the Patriarch Visit with Fr Bashutskyy and the requirements from the Youth

September 2012

  • Alexandria Kazmerik, Jay Korban and Alexander Pankiw greeted His Beatitude Sviatoslav with bread and salt at the welcome at the airport (several other youth & young adults were there also ~ 15-20) on Sept 4.
  • Andrew Konopelny mediated the evening with the Patriarch for youth event on Sept 7 (390+ people attended)
  • 8 youth and young adults helped out at the Airport and the hotel on Sept 8 all day as the visiting Bishops arrived
    • 30+ youth & young adults attended the Patriarchal Divine Lit. on Sept 9
    • 12 youth and young adults attended the Banquet for the Patriarch on Sept 16
    • On Wed, Sept 26, 8 youth attended the Fr Semzcuk memorial service at St Andrews Parish

October 2012

  • On October 19-20, our Unity 2012 team held its wind-up meeting at the Chancery. We were able to debrief the weekend and compile some new information to take with us to the Unity 2014 visioning retreat later in November.  (5 stayed over, 12 were at the meeting)
  •  On the evening of the 20th, Sts. Peter and Paul youth invited us to attend their spaghetti dinner fundraiser entitled “A Night in Italy.” At this event, a slideshow was presented showing images from Unity 2012.  (10 attended the dinner)
  • On Saturday October 27, 11 of our youth and young adults attended the annual fundraising dinner for Ukrainian Park Camp, also at Sts. Peter and Paul (we won ½ of the final prize of $1000)

November 2012

  • On November 23, Andrew K, Alex P and I traveled to Edmonton to help facilitate and participate in the Unity 2014 visioning retreat (3 from MB, 1 from SK, 11 from AB, 0 from BC & ON).

December 2012:

  • Developed a 5 page/day fasting activity for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity and posted it on the website.
  • Developed 2012 Christmas Reflections and Activities, the 2012 ST. PHILIP’S (Pilipivka) FAST FOR FAMILIES activities and posted them on the UCY website for all parishes to use
    • Designed and made 330 ornament/cards for the Holy Family Nursing Home Residence
    • Caroled at Holy Family Nursing Home on December 30 (18 youth/young adults attended)

January 2013

  • Developed Year of Faith Activities ~ 92 Things to Do This Summer (PDF), plus other activities for the year of faith, the Year of Faith ~ Prayers and the Year of Faith ~ The Benefits of Going to Liturgy and posted them on the website for all parishes to use.
  • I took part in the 25th anniversary of the Western Canadian Association of Catholic Youth Ministers. Due to a last minute illness, Laurie Friesen and I did the session in icons on Saturday, January 19th
  • Booked and hosted the WCACYM members at a service and tour of the Blessed Vasyl Shrine (50+ participants from across Western Canada ~ Youth Directors/Leaders) on January 19th
  • 10+ Ukrainian Catholic young adults attended the Theology on Tap on January 17th at Tavern United MTS Center.  There were over 70 people who attended the talk on Faith.
  • 5 of our executive members attended the annual New Year’s Levee on January 20th for His Grace Metropolitan Lawrence
  • Attended the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Youth Service on January 24 and had 2 of our executive members participate in the service (Brittney Taylor and Alex Pankiw) (5 attended the service ~ would have been more, but there was bad weather that night)
  • Worked on, printed and mailed/e-mailed out UCY Newsletters for January (the 100th issue)

February 2013

  • The annual Super Bowl of Caring was held at various parishes on Super Bowl Sunday (Feb 3)
  • On Sunday Feb 10 our youth and young adults held our first in a series of evening services from the Ukrainian Catholic Church at 233 Scotia called ‘Beyond Sunday Mornings’. Once a month the UCY plan to host different services throughout the various Ukrainian Catholic churches in Winnipeg and showcase a different service each time. Our first service was Moleben at 7 held at 7:00 pm (Served by Fr Volodymyr Bashutskyy) and everyone was invited to come and experience this beautiful service. This was the initiative of Alexander Pankiw.
  • On Friday, February 16th Table for Two was held at St. Joseph’s parish. There were about 14 young couples from our Eparchy who were able to sit and discuss important issues in their relationship with each other and the guest speakers were Michael and Cheryl Lisowski.

March 2013

  • On Sunday March 3rd, we continued our Speaker Series with a Teaching Liturgy at St Anne’s Parish at 7pm done by Fr Mark Gnutel.
  • On Sunday, Mar 24 we attended the Palm Sunday Retreat “The Greatest Love Story of All ” Young Adult Retreat and Potluck on March 24th, 2013, 3:30-8pm at The Welcome Home (188 Euclid Ave). Retreat Facilitator: Rev. Fr. Mark Gnutel. Potluck Theme: Childhood Favourites!

April 2013

  • The Anniversary Memorial Service For Our Late Most Reverend Michael Bzdel, C.Ss.R Archbishop Emeritus of Winnipeg & Metropolitan of Ukrainian Catholics in Canada was held on Wednesday April 03, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church.
  • Attended Holy Ghost Parish’s Easter Dinner on Sunday, April 14th 2013. Dinner followed the 10:30am Divine Liturgy.
  • The UCY Executive purchased 2 tickets and attended the St Michael’s Fundraising dinner on April 27th.
  • Ukrainian Catholic Youth and Young Adults held another Moleben at Seven on April 28th at BVM Parish. This was the second Moleben at Seven, which was dedicated to Blessed Nykyta Budka. Moleben was served in Ukrainian & English. This Moleben was open to anyone who wanted to come. Fellowship hosted by Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Parish followed Moleben.

May 2013

  • Manitoba Down Syndrome Society and the Canadian Down Syndrome Conference Committee asked the UCY to have a booth at the CDSS Conference May 17th, 2013.  This booth was to showcase the Ukrainian Culture with egg decorating and coloring pages (of Ukrainian Themes) for the young children attending the conference with their parents.  We had 6 people help out at the booth and Travis Taylor performed Ukrainian dancing on the main stage.
    • Sunday, May 26, 2013 Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church hosted the 3rd Moleben at 7 service which was dedicated to the Mother of God.  26 in attendance
    • The Young Adults were invited to attend the youth/young adult night hosted by The Welcome Home for this years’ Serve session on May 27.  Faith Unplugged – a Young Adult Q & A night at King’s Head Pub (120 King Street) on Monday, May 27th, at 7:30 pm. The Ukrainian Redemptorists and a panel of other professed and lay individuals shared their answers to all of our questions. 17 in attendance

June 2013

  • One last event for the year was our annual end of the year UCY gathering. This year, just like last year, we went to Harbourview again on June 15th at 1pm. We went mini golfing and then joining together for a snack/meal at the Sal’s Restaurant on site

July 2013

  • World Youth Day at Home! We celebrate WYD on July 27-28th! This weekend included a service project, catechesis, prayer services, a pilgrimage, a cultural evening with a couple from Brazil teaching us music and dancing from their hometown, and live streaming of the closing Papal Mass in Rio de Janeiro. The Young adults also slept at the top of the grotto under the stars! This weekend started at St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church and finished at Immaculate Conception Church of Cooks Creek.  14 were in attendance

August 2013

  • Sang in the choir for the Saturday Liturgy for the Pilgrimage at Immaculate Conception Parish in Cooks Creek on August 17

Upcoming Events for 2013-2014 Pastoral Year:

  • Attend the UCC Convention at Polo Park CanadInns on Oct 18-19, 2013.  Continue with the monthly ‘Moleben at 7’ services, and the Beyond Sunday Mornings Teaching Services.  Host a Pilipivka and a Great Fast Retreat.  Attend Unity 2014 in Alberta in August.  Plan to attend WYD 2016 in Poland.
